In the context of Brazilian musicology, it is commonly perceived that jazz and bossa nova share many similarities, but it is not clear who influenced who — and how? Despite what some people intuit, it is incorrect to solely assert that jazz was bossa nova’s influence, even though it was ‘born’ before. Rather, both genres have mutually influenced each other. This is specially true after Tom Jobim’s huge success outside Brazil in the late 60s, which led him to record an album with Frank Sinatra. His influence alone on jazz was substantial, not to mention other musicians such as Sergio Mendes, Luiz Bonfá, and João Gilberto, all of which recorded albums with american jazz players.

The objective of this study is to visualize and understand Bossa Nova and Jazz chord similarities with Python. I’ll use web scraping — a data extraction technique which consists in ‘scraping’ a site’s content through its html code — to gather the chords of popular jazz and bossa nova songs. For this, I’ll use the site CifraClub, a Brazilian chords website which contains, among other things, bossa nova and jazz songs.
