Over the past week there has been an ongoing conversation on Twitter about how many people — especially those in the games industry — feel that the current direction of “modern C++” doesn’t align with their needs. One particular failing of C++ from a game programmer’s perspective is that it seems to be becoming a language where debug performance is ignored and optimization is increasingly expected and required.

Having worked in the games industry for 23 years prior to 2019, I have some observations and opinions on this topic as it applies to game development. Is debuggability important to game programmers? Why, and what are the related issues?
