When the team behind PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds dropped its latest patch on PC last week, it paved the way for another, perhaps more critical update: new and improved server-side anti-cheat measures. But the update led to all manner of instability, including game crashes for some users. So PUBG Corp. decided to roll back the patch, giving some cheaters a reprieve for the time being.

It’s no mystery that PUBG Corp. has a cheating problem. Back-of-the-napkin math suggests that BattleEye, which provides some third-party anti-cheat support for Battlegrounds, has banned something like 13 percent of the game’s owners so far. According to a post on Battlegrounds’ official forums, last week’s update was intended to block “additional cheats and helper programs that alter the graphics or aid in gameplay in some way,” including the popular ReShade software, which boosts the game’s contrast.
