Last month, Electronic Arts sent shockwaves through the industry when they canned the anticipated Star Wars title from Visceral Games (Dead Space), shuttering the acclaimed studio in the process. Since then, EA has tried to downplay speculation that the game was cancelled for being single-player focused, too linear, or lacking trendy online features, with Electronic Arts executive vice president Patrick Söderlund claiming it was purely a “creative decision.”
Well, during a presentation at the Credit Suisse 21st Annual Technology conference in Scottsdale, Arizona, Electronic Arts CFO Blake Jorgensen was singing a different, perhaps more honest, tune. According to Jorgensen, the demise of Visceral’s Star Wars game was an “economic decision” based on EA’s belief that the market and gamers’ tastes had changed.
