Five European countries have critiqued ‘Big Tech’ (read: Google and Apple) for its role in shaping coronavirus contact tracing standards on the continent, saying Europe needs to forge a way to digital sovereignty and loosen its reliance on US tech giants. 

The top digital officials from France, Italy, Germany, Spain and Portugal wrote in a joint op-ed that the debate over contact tracing apps has raised issues regarding “the way Europe defines its relationship with digital global players”. The officials write that at a time like this, they would expect technology companies “to take into account the countries’ overall wellbeing and needs when setting digital standards”.
