So I am not quite awake this morning and at the coffee station in a hotel lobby. You’ve been there, bleary-eyed. A light conservation over selecting sweeteners and creamers between an anesthesiologist and a pilot leads to a discussion on the similarities of their jobs. Both aviation and anesthesia require extensive preparation prior to the execution of their work… without proper preparation would you get in the plane or lay down on the surgical table? Me neither.

Statistically, bad outcomes occur with planes on landing and takeoff, and with patients upon induction and emergence… and almost nothing happens in between, cruising at 37,000 feet during flight or watching the surgeon work tirelessly, capillary by capillary, during an operation. Both jobs create tons of data before, during and after each success and even more data after each failure. Both function in very complex inherently dangerous settings.
