California workers filed the fewest unemployment claims since just before government agencies began to order wide-ranging business shutdowns to combat the coronavirus, a welcome counterpoint to the dreary statewide economy.
Statewide initial jobless claims totaled 53,000 during the week that ended on June 5, which were 19,000 fewer than the 72,000 first-time filings for the week ending on May 29, the U.S. Labor Department reported.
