Hundreds of thousands of acres across the Bay Area — equivalent to the size of more than eight San Franciscos — had been scorched by three large fire complexes, which continued to burn with almost zero containment Thursday morning.

In total, the three fire complexes had burned through more than 250,000 acres across a dozen counties in the region and beyond, prompting evacuations from east of San Jose all the way up to Sonoma.
