Downtown San Jose restaurants and businesses are expressing dismay and frustration with San Jose officials after police ordered several restaurants to shut down their outdoor dining service early Saturday night.

Restaurants on San Pedro Street in downtown were paid a surprise visit Saturday night by members of the San Jose Police Department’s new downtown patrol team who informed the restaurants — after months of operating under normal business hours — that the city’s Al Fresco program required that they wrap up service to customers in public outdoor spaces by 10 p.m.
